aircraft contrails account for up to 2.3% of global warming. Help us understand them by making contrail measurements with your phone! Just point your phone at a contrail you can see in the sky.
Can't see a contrail right now? add contrailkit to your homescreen for next time.
You can install contrailkit to your home screen just like an app, so that you can easily open it when you'd like to measure a contrail.
Use the menu in your web browser and select the option that says "add to home", "install" or "add page to > home screen".
In safari, use the share menu and then select "Add to home screen".
what is the purpose of contrailkit?
contrails are linear clouds of ice crystals that condense from jet engine exhaust gases. They reflect and trap thermal radiation from the sun as well as from the earth.
By some estimates contrails may create more of a warming effect on the climate than the CO2 emissions from planes.
To reduce the impact of contrails, we need data to understand their formation. You can help improve our contrail modelling technology by making measurements of contrails using your phone.
Thankyou for helping to advance climate science.
please accept the permissions neccessary to measure contrails with your device:
callibrate your device's motion sensors by moving and twisting it in a figure-eight The more you move it about the better!
aim at a contrail and tap to record its location!
Hold your phone as steady as possible for accuracy
drag to align with contrail direction and press confirm button when done!

We have models that predict the formation of contrails, but they aren't always right.
Below is a model's prediction of contrail formation based on the weather conditions.

Please submit measurements even if the prediction was incorrect, to help improve the models
Thankyou for submitting your measurement!
The data you collected is being used by researchers at the whittle lab in cambridge,
who are working with the aviation industry to reduce its climate impact. The data will also be made available to other institutions
where scientists will use it to gather new insights about contrail formation.
Please share contrailkit with your friends so we can collect more data!
add contrailkit to your homescreen for when you see a contrail next!
